"Taxi" is the well known 1978–1983 American TV sitcom where a taxi company in New York City is used. It is called the NY Sunshine Cab Co. The company's fleet garage is actually located in the Manhattan borough. The names of some of the key drivers (characters) who work for the company are: Alex, Elaine, Bobby, and Reverend Jim.

During its run, this series won three straight Emmys as Outstanding Comedy Series. It had one of the all-time great ensembles, including Judd Hirsch, Danny DeVito, Andy Kaufman, Marilu Henner, Tony Danza and Jeff Conaway. The episodes in the series came from the producers who had worked on `The Mary Tyler Moore Show,' `Bob Newhart' and other series from MTM Productions.

Show episodes ran from the hilariously soulful to the sophisticated to the surreal. Over and above the great humor of the show, "Taxi" often tackled such dramatic issues as racism, drug addiction, single parenthood, blindness, obesity, animal abuse, bisexuality, teenage runaways, divorce, nuclear war, sexual harassment, premenstrual mood disorders, gambling addiction, and the loss of a loved one.

"Taxi" ran for five seasons and many critics said that it truly deserved to run for several more years.
