On the 1960 - 1966 animated TV sitcom, "The Flintstones" Fred and Barney like to think that they are average or above average guys. They enjoy bowling and are members of the fictional "Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes" (Lodge No. 26), a men-only club paralleling real-life fraternities such as the Loyal Order of Moose.

With this show, it was a Hanna-Barbera production and ran for six seasons where working class neighbors lived and interacted with each other. One key character is a blowhard, Fred Flintstone. He is very often seen with his goofy friend, sidekick, and neighbor Barney Rubble. Their wives Wilma and Betty are the ones who have the practical personalities.

Here the show's gimmick, besides being a cartoon series, concerns characters who face everyday modern situations set in prehistoric times. There was no electricity, no internal combustion engines, no shoes, etc. Still the characters had modern conveniences like dishwashers. Some TV critics held the belief that the show was a Stone Age parody of the 1950s U.S. sitcom, "The Honeymooners", which featured 2 newlywed couples living in NYC. One of the show's creators, William Hanna, once confirmed this rumor, but his co-creator Joseph Barbera maintained that it was just a myth.

All of the show creators were very proud of the fact that it contained several major breakthroughs for network television and was the "first prime-time" animated series on American television, the ABC network.
