There are some similarities and shared themes between the 2004 - 2010 television series, "Lost" and the film, "The Wizard of Oz" (1939). One of the major similarities concerns the main antagonist (Ben" Linus) in the second and third seasons. In subsequent seasons, he becomes a morally ambiguous ally to the lost survivors.

When Ben is captured, he tells the survivors that his name is "Henry Gale". It is the name of Dorothy's uncle in the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz". In the book and film, the Wizard travels to the land of Oz in a hot air balloon. In "Lost", a man named Henry Gale, tries to cross the Pacific Ocean in a hot air balloon. He will crash on the Island. Here he dies and is buried next to his balloon.

It is Benjamin Linus, a member of the Others, who assumes this man's name after he is captured by Danielle Rousseau and given to the survivors. He claims that he is Henry Gale, a wealthy miner from Minnesota, who crashed on the Island with his wife, Jennifer, in their hot air balloon. Henry further says that his wife dies of a mysterious sickness; it is a story that he holds on to during a very brutal interrogation.

The analogy between the TV show and film may even be seen in another way. We could be asked to assume that Henry, like the Wizard in the film, is the "man behind the curtain". He is the real leader of the 'Others', while everyone has previously been led to believe that Mr. Friendly (Tom), or to a greater degree Alvar Hanso, was in charge.
