"Welcome Back, Kotter" was a TV sitcom that originally aired on the ABC network in America from September 1975 to June 1979. There was a group of students (with 4 key members) who are the current "Sweathogs". They are: Arnold Horshack (Ron Palillo), a nasal-voiced nerd with a childlike disposition; Freddie “Boom Boom” Washington (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs), a tall, super-cool charmer; Juan Epstein (Robert Hegyes), a “Puerto Rican Jew”, a street-savvy hustler; and Vinnie Barbarino (John Travolta), a dimwitted ladies’ man who was the Sweathogs’ team captain.

Epstein uses the catchphrase: "Hey, Mr. Kotter, I got a note!" (The phony notes, excusing Epstein from classes and other school assignments, were always written by Epstein himself, though he claimed they were signed by, as written, "Epstein's Mother." Epstein would mime the wording of the note while Kotter spoke the words, usually proving the note was written by Epstein himself.)

On the show, Mr. Kotter (Gabriel "Gabe" Kaplan) is an involved and caring teacher. He is a person who will always help his students, the Sweathogs. These are the students in his class that always get his attention. They end up in trouble on a regular basis. So, Kotter frequently finds himself butting heads with cantankerous vice principal Mr. Woodman (John Sylvester White), who dismisses the Sweathogs as a lost cause. Kotter finds that he must juggle his teaching life and his home life. He gets help from his wife Julie (Marcia Strassman).
