On the U.S. TV cartoon series "Underdog", the actor who provided the voice for Underdog and his secret identity of Shoeshine Boy was Wally Cox. Underdog, Shoeshine Boy's heroic alter ego, appears whenever his love interest Sweet Polly Purebred is being victimized by such villains as Simon Bar Sinister or Riff Raff.

In the series, Underdog nearly always speaks in rhyming couplets, as in "There's no need to fear, Underdog is here!" Wally Cox would usually perform the hero's voice in a high pitch manner when was announcing the present of Underdog and that he was going to take some type of bold action.

Underdog is supposed to be a parody of the Superman idol. They both have secret identities, super powers, women (or puppies) fantasizing about them, and an entire police force relying on their abilities to do the job they’re supposed to do. Underdog is basically, some type of poor man’s (or children’s) Superman. Walt Disney Studios does not even try to hide this fact when it makes its 2007 movie.

In addition to similarities about Underdog and Superman, they do have some differences. Underdog wears a red shirt with a blue cape, and Superman wears a red cape with a blue shirt. Knowing Underdog is supposed to be like Superman, it doesn't in the end bother most people that there are so much similarities.
