On the 1998 - 2004 U.S. TV series "Sex and the City", Carrie Bradshaw's newspaper column appears in the fictitious paper, New York Star. This TV series is based upon a semi-autobiographical character played by Sarah Jessica Parker. The role was created by Candace Bushnell, who published the book Sex and the City. The popular book was based on Bushnell's own columns in the New York Observer.

The show "Sex and the City" takes a candid and comical look at the lives and loves of four Manhattan career women in their 30s and 40s. Carrie Bradshaw is a writer and self-described sexual anthropologist. She philosophizes about modern women and how they handle sex while living in an urban setting. She draws from her own experiences and those of her friends, who actively participate the NYC dating scene.

Carrie’s tumultuous relationship with the charismatic yet emotionally unavailable Mr. Big (Chris Noth) underpins a very strong story line, which forms a defining relationship in the series. It is the one against which all of Carrie’s other affairs are compared. In the column, Carrie likes to note that just because society now recognizes women as fully functioning, independent humans (or at least, most of the time society does), it doesn't mean navigating the world of sex and relationships is less messy, or freeing for any woman in a modern environment.
