On the NBC 1989 - 1993 U.S. TV show "Quantum Leap", the name of the key device (super computer) with artificial intelligence (AI) that helps Dr. Samuel Beckett (Scott Bakula) "leap" into other people's lives is named Ziggy.

In this series, it is explained that Ziggy is the super hybrid computer that runs the Project Quantum Leap. It was built by Dr. Samuel Beckett and Gooshie, a computer programmer who worked on some of the first components within Project Quantum Leap. Ziggy has a sense of humor unlike most computers. Sam himself said: "The only thing separating Ziggy from a normal calculating machine is his ego."

Later Beckett expanded on this idea in the episode 'The Leap Back'. In this episode, after Ziggy is being particularly stubborn, Beckett lamented about it by saying "Why did I have to give him Barbra Streisand's ego?" Ziggy has lots of information of the past. He gives information to Al (Albert "Al" Calavicci, USN). Al is played by Dean Stockwell who as a hologram talks directly to Sam. Ziggy can't interact with Beckett being just a computer.

Ziggy is said to be capable of doing "a trillion floating point calculations at once". He has over 1,000,000 GB of memory. Thus, he has immense abilities and so his aforementioned ego is very large. Without Ziggy nothing happens, Ziggy is in fact mentioned in almost every episode of the show.
