Adams (Dan Haggerty) saves an orphaned grizzly bear cub. He adopts this bear and names him Ben. The bear, while growing to its huge adult size, becomes Adams' closest and best friend/companion. Consistently kind and gentle, Adams discovers and demonstrates an uncanny ability to gain the trust of most of the indigenous wildlife where he lives. He will help and sometimes rescue hurt and ill animals. He takes in and tames many wild animal species. Originally a hunter, with his learned affection for wildlife, Adams finally decides never to harm another animal whenever possible.

In the TV series, Adams also has two human friends. One is an old mountain man trader named "Mad Jack" played by Denver Pyle who is often featured with his mule ("Number Seven"). The other friend is a Native American by the name of "Nakoma" played by Don Shanks. Adams, Mad Jack, and Nakoma help others and mountain visitors while protecting wildlife at the same time.
