On the 1959 - 1973 U.S. TV western series "Bonanza," it was a true case of art imitating life regarding one of the characters. Victor Sen Yung was the actor who played the Cartwright family chef, Hop Sing. In real life, he was actually a very accomplished chef. Once the show came to an end, Yung supported himself by appearing on cooking shows and authoring "The Great Wok Cookbook" in 1974.

During the series, Yung as Hop Sing performed as the happy-go-lucky cook for the entire Cartwright family. It was well known that his blood pressure would often rise if the family came late for dinner. He was a very faithful domestic servant and served as a clever form of comedy relief. He had little to do beyond his every day chores. He once used his martial arts to assail a towering family foe.

On each television season of "Bonanza," Hop Sing only appeared in an average of eight to nine shows. His role however was often referenced in the shows where he did not appear.
