Director Mike Nichols was able to work with screenwriter Buck Henry on "The Graduate" (1967), "Catch-22" (1970), and " The Day of the Dolphin" (1973). Nichols did not work with Henry on the 1971 film "Carnal Knowledge". This film is an American comedy-drama which was directed by Mike Nichols and written by Jules Feiffer. It stars Jack Nicholson, Art Garfunkel, Ann-Margret, and Candice Bergen.

In the movie, nice guy Sandy (Art Garfunkel) and charming schemer Jonathan Fuerst (Jack Nicholson) meet as college roommates in the late 1940s. Sandy meets, dates, and eventually marries the seemingly sweet female, Susan (Candice Bergen). Sandy does not know that Susan cheated on him with Jonathan. Years later, with his marriage struggling, Sandy attempts to mimic Jonathan's promiscuous behavior with women. During this same time period, the misogynistic Jonathan is finally trying his hand at monogamy. He has established a relationship with the gorgeous but emotionally needy Bobbie (Ann-Margret).

By viewing the movie, critics and fans find that the efforts of the major actors to follow the film script are trailblazing. The script here smartly requires the film to chronicle the sexual mores and escapades of two college pals over two grueling decades.
