The Africanized honey bee is a hybrid bee that is a crossbreed between the African honey bee and various European honey bees. They were imported and crossbred in 1956 by Brazilian scientists attempting to breed a honey bee that is better suited for the South American tropics.

In 1957, some of the bees escaped quarantine and began mating with the local Brazilian honey bees. They began quickly multiplying and extending their range throughout South and Central America. In the past decade, they have made their way into our homeland and have established themselves mainly in the southwestern part of the US.

The Africanized honey bee is very aggressive and will defend its hive by attacking its invader in large groups. These bees have been also known to attack under other circumstances, such as being disturbed by loud noises or even vibrations.

Though their venom is no more potent than other honey bees, they are more dangerous due to their aggressive nature, attacking in larger numbers and pursuing their target for greater distances.
