Aristotle's "Rhetoric", from the 4th century BC, introduced the basics of persuasive communications, especially in public speaking. He stated that a good argument would have three basic characteristics: pathos, ethos, and logos

Pathos deals with an emotional persuasion of the audience and the emotional appeal to the audience.

Ethos deals with the confidence, credibility of the author and information, and moral values of the material and presenter.

Logos deals with the reasoning and logic of the material being presented and the logical method the material is presented.

These methods have been expanded and refined through the ages, but are still the three primary pillars of argument, persuasion, and public speaking.
