Pikes Peak is the highest summit of the Rocky Mountains of North America.
Pikes Peak, in Colorado, is part of the mountain range in western North America known as the Rocky Mountains. It is 14,115 ft high. The highest summit of the Rocky Mountains, also in Colorado, is Mount Elbert at 14,440 ft.
The Rockies stretch more than 3000 miles from the northern part of British Columbia in western Canada to New Mexico in the southwestern part of the U.S. They lie in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta as well as the U.S. states of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico.

Lieutenant Zebulon Pike was assigned to find the source of the Mississippi River after which he explored the Spanish territories of the Southern Rockies. After he and his team reached the summit of the future Pike's Peak they were captured by the Spanish and taken to Santa Fe then to the border of the Louisiana territory and freed.
He rose to the rank of Brigadier General and died in combat at the Battle of York (today's Toronto) in the War of 1812.

When I was in the 3rd grade, 50+ years ago, I did a report on Pikes Peak. I, apparently was wrong when I informed the class that Pikes Peak was the highest summit in the Rocky Mountain range.
