Before the NBA (National Basketball Association) was formed in 1946, the only U.S. city to win all three major sports championships in the same year, which is an equivalent achievement, is the City of Detroit, Michigan. The city did this in the MLB, NFL, and NHL (Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Hockey League), respectively. The year that this occurred was 1935. The Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings all won their first championships in the same season (1935-1936).

During the midst of one of the worst economic crisis in the history of the United States, the City of Detroit, Michigan found great reasons to celebrate. This was a city that had been galvanized by the sports world by the end of 1935. The Detroit Tigers, coming off a near World Series victory in 1934, would raise the city to new heights of frenzied excitement with their first major title win in 1935. Less than two months later, the Detroit Lions, playing in only their second season would bring home their first NFL crown, after an astonishing comeback in the final weeks of the regular football season. But, there would be more. The newly christened Detroit Red Wings were also at that very moment in time playing their way to the first Stanley Cup of their storied history. The people in Detroit lived it all and the city became "Detroit City of Champions".
