The Battleship USS Maine was sunk in Havana Harbor 15 February 1898. Cuba was in revolt against Spain and the Maine had been sent there to protect (U.S. interest). The Maine had been in the harbor for only 3 weeks when she suddenly exploded and sank. Popular opinion was that the ship had been blown up by Spain. Publisher William Randolph Hearst coined the phrase "Remember the Maine! To Hell with Spain!". This rallying cry caught on, and the U.S. ended up declaring war on Spain. A Navy board of inquiry appointed by President McKinley, concluded that a mine had been used to destroy the ship. However, later it was deemed more likely that an internal magazine explosion was the real cause. In 1911 the ship was patched, raised, and towed out of Havana harbor to deeper water, where it was sunk again.
