Robinson Crusoe Island is a territory of which South American country?
Robinson Crusoe Island formerly known as Más a Tierra (Closer to Land), is a part of the Juan Fernández Islands. The Juan Fernández Islands (Spanish: Archipiélago Juan Fernández) are a sparsely inhabited island group reliant on tourism and fishing in the South Pacific Ocean. Situated off the coast of Chile, they are composed of three main volcanic islands namely Robinson Crusoe, Alejandro Selkirk and Santa Clara.
The Robinson Crusoe island was home to the marooned sailor Alexander Selkirk from 1704 to 1709. It is thought to have inspired novelist Daniel Defoe's fictional Robinson Crusoe in his 1719 novel about the character. His novel however is set in the Caribbean, not in the Juan Fernández Islands. The Chilean government renamed the island Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966, for tourism benefits. There is also a Robinson Crusoe Island in Fiji which is located off the southwest coast of the main island of Viti Levu and has a history dating back 3,500 years.
