Sarajevo is the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located within the greater Sarajevo valley of Bosnia and surrounded by the Dinaric Alps. The city is situated along the Miljacka River in the heart of the Balkan. It has an estimated population of 500,000 people.
Sarajevo was founded by the Ottoman Empire in the 1461. The name 'Sarajevo' derives from the Turkish noun 'saray', meaning 'palace' or 'mansion'. The city has a diverse range of religions and cultures, so is sometimes called the 'Jerusalem of Europe' or 'Jerusalem of the Balkans'. It is one of only a few European capitals home to a mosque, a Catholic church, an Orthodox church and a synagogue.
The 1984 Winter Olympics were held in Sarajavo. At that time, the city was part of the former Yugoslavia, which won one medal. After the Yugoslav War, Bosnia and Herzegovina declared their independence on 6th April 1992.
Sarajevo is twinned with several cities across the world, including Coventry in the United Kingdom (since 1957), Innsbruck, Austria (since 1980), Harris Burg, Pennsylvania, United States (since 1984), Barcelona, Spain (since 2000) and Dayton, United States (since 1999).
