Um, I was always taught Marco Polo brought it back from China.

I was under the impression that Marco Polo brought pasta to Italy from China. According to culinarylore.com ( instead of Wikipedia ) If this is legend instead of fact, why would such a legend have been created? The answer is actually very simple. There are only two areas in the world where noodles, in the time after Polo, were a staple food. China and her Far East neighbors, and Italy. Everything in between the huge land of Eurasia…no noodles. It stands to reason, therefore, that there must be some connection between the noodles of Asia and the noodles of Italy. And the only obvious connection is Marco Polo. In case you didn’t already know, Italy absolutely does not embrace the legend of Marco Polo and his pasta.. This is only a small part of what's on the site regarding this issue, I found it by asking the question did Marco Polo bring spaghetti from China to Italy.

Well, regardless of where pasta originated, the word "spaghetti" originated in what is now Italy. (Now we could quibble about which originated first—spaghetti or Italy.)

There is no evidence that any of Marco Polos exploits are true. It doesn't mean they aren't. However some of his claims to have been a n advisor is doubtful. The Chinese like the Roman's wrote everything down and there is no mention of Marco Polo.

I read it was brought to Italy by the Arabs who also traded a version of it to China which became noodles.
