‘Sportsman’ Drag Racing is traditionally run over what length track?
Sportsman Drag Racing is a non-professional set of classes within Drag Racing. Two competitors race the traditional quarter mile from a standing start seeking to be first across the line. Some Professional classes race over a thousand feet - style brought in my the sports’s governing body in an attempt to slow the top speed which was approaching 340mph and to also provide a longer baking area without lengthening the track, other tracks are an eighth of a mile for various reasons including top speed management and lack of space.
Drag Racing and Hot Rods have been synonymous since before WW2 - kids would race their modified (Hot-rodded) cars over a city block (usually a quarter of a mile) between the traffic lights in Downtown USA’s ‘main drag’ - but is wasn’t until the 1950s that the Southern California Timing Association started organising off street meetings at disused airports that Drag Racing truly became a sport.
