St. Lucia is located in the Caribbean Sea, about 240 miles north of Venezuela. Throughout its history, control of St. Lucia alternated between Britain and France until Britain took over in 1814. Over the years, both the British and the French brought slaves from Africa to work on the plantations. In 1834, Britain banned slavery throughout its empire. The British gradually gave St. Lucia more control over its inner affairs and the country became independent on Feb 22, 1979.
