Tennis player Rafael Nadal's nickname is the 'King of...' what?
Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal (born 1986) is one of the sport's greatest-ever players, and his dominance on the clay surface has earned him the 'King of Clay' nickname by many fans and commentators.
At no event has this been demonstrated better than the French Open, the annual Grand Slam played on clay courts at Roland-Garros in Paris, which he won for a 13th time in 2020. At the time of writing, this is the most number of titles any player has ever claimed at a single tournament. Furthermore, he compiled an 81-match win streak on clay courts between 2005 and 2007 - the longest on a single surface in the Open Era in men's singles.
Nadal has formed part of a golden generation of tennis players in the 21st century nicknamed 'the Big Three', along with long-time rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic (some also extend it to a 'Big Four' with Andy Murray).
Having always trailed Federer's record Grand Slam haul, Nadal drew level with the Swiss for the first time in 2020 after the aforementioned French Open success. The Mallorca native has also won the Olympic gold medal in both singles and doubles, and has led Spain to multiple Davis Cup titles.
