"Roxanne" is based on "Cyrano de Bergerac" written by Edmond Rostand in 1897. In both the movie and play, the main character has a gift for words and writing, however both have a rather large nose. This keeps them from expressing their true feelings to the woman of their desires ... Roxanne in the movie / Roxane in the play.

A fellow firefighter in the movie wants to court Roxanne (played by Daryl Hannah), but cannot begin to converse on the same intellectual level. Steve Martin (C. D. Bales and his fire Chief) begins writing letters for his coworker and sending them to Roxanne, who believes they are from the firefighter and not C.D.

There is even a scene in both the movie and play where the main characters court Roxanne under a window, without being seen by Roxanne in an attempt to woo said lady.

Perhaps the funniest and most memorable part of the movie is when Steve Martin is challenged in a bar to come up with better put downs for his nose than "Big Nose".
