The Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley (1863) was designed and built amid secrecy during the American Civil War. Today, the H. L. Hunley is housed at a laboratory in Charleston, South Carolina. This submarine has for some time held historic secrets. It has been very slow and spare in yielding significant information to researchers armed with modern problem solving technology.

Over a good number of years, some answers about major questions relating to the Hunley have been sought. Some of the questions have included the following. Was the loss of the Hunley the result of a torpedo's detonation? Was there an unsecured hatch which caused the loss? Was the loss caused by a lucky enemy shot that blasted a hole in the Confederate vessel's viewing port? And, why were the remains of the crew members remarkably found at their stations, rather than jammed together near an escape hatch? So, experts today are still looking for key answers.

Also, visitors are truly impressed because they can actually see the Hunley. They are able to gaze into a 90,000-gallon freshwater conservation tank where this submarine is now carefully being preserved.
