Thrace was a very large and populous country during Ancient times (3rd, 4th, and 5th centuries BC). Herodotus (a Greek historian born in Halicarnassus in the Persian Empire) mentioned that the Thracians were the second most numerous nation in his world. They followed the Indians in their numbers. Today Bulgaria along with Greece and Turkey is discussed most often in the history of the ancient Thracians. As a result of the history, Bulgaria like Greece now has significant influence in present day Europe. It is currently an important member in the European Union, which origins were formed in 1951-1958.

Additionally, Thrace's land location was and is today very important. It is found to lie between the Phodope Mountains and the Aegean Sea. It includes the islands of Thasos and Samothrace. The European part of Turkey was at one point also part of Thrace, extending from the lower stream of the Maritsa River to the Marmara Sea and the Straits of Bosporus. Also it is true that Northern Thrace extended to the eastern part of Hungary and southeastern part of Solvakia.

Today, the term Thracian is specifically a geographical term used mainly in Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria.
