Santa Fe, New Mexico is situated in the Sangre de Christo {Blood of Christ} mountains. The iron in the rock makes them look red. Santa Fe, being an old city, was a popular destination for people coming west from the east coast of the US. It was a particularly important point on a rail line heading toward the California Coast.

The elevation of Santa Fe is at 2188 m {7199 ft} and allows snowfall in winters. The nearby ski area of Taos gets much more snow and is quite popular. Santa Fe has a strong arts community and is popular for traveling groups of artists trying to sell their wares.

Santa Fe has moderate weather due to its southern location in the US, but high elevation. The average high temp in July is about 28C {82F} and the average high in December/January is about 4C {40F}. It's an arid climate. The city has many days of bright sunshine.

By contrast, both Denver, Colorado, the "Mile High City" at 1610 m {5280 feet} elevation and Cheyenne, Wyoming at 1878 m {6163 ft} are lower in elevation.
