Inspector G. Lestrade is a fictional character that appeared in the 'Sherlock Holmes" stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Little is given about Lestrade's early life. He was probably born and raised in London, most likely in a working-class family. Lestrade makes his first appearance in "A Study in Scarlet". He makes his last appearance in the novel "The Adventure of the Three Garridebs".

He joined Scotland Yard in 1861; he is not a particularly imaginative man. He also didn't have any special gift for criminal detection. Nonetheless, he rose to some prominence in the police force through sheer tenacity. After he came into contact with Sherlock Holmes, he developed a grudging respect for him. Holmes is often called upon to assist Lestrade with his cases.

Lestrade is brought into a criminal case by Holmes. Holmes is conducting an investigation; he is making inquires about John Garrideb as James Winter alias Morecroft, alias "Killer" Evans. This is a man who escaped prison after shooting three men in the U.S. In London, he killed Rodger Prescott, a Chicago forger whose description matched the former occupant of Nathan Garrideb's room.

Holmes goes to see Inspector Lestrade at Scotland Yard because Lestrade is nearly often correct in his deductions when given all the facts. On his own, he tends to miss some crucial elements or make some fundamental errors in his deductions because of his lack of keen imagination.
