Squire Allworthy is a kindhearted widower who acts as a surrogate father to the foundling in Henry Fielding’s comic novel "Tom Jones" (1749). It is among the earliest English prose works to be classified as a novel. The book opens with the narrator stating that the purpose of the novel will be to explore "human nature".

Squire Allworthy suspects that the infant whom he adopts and names Tom Jones is the illegitimate child of his servant Jenny Jones. When Tom is a young man, he falls in love with Sophia Western, his beautiful and virtuous neighbour. In the end, his true identity is revealed and he wins Sophia’s hand, but numerous obstacles have to be overcome before he achieves this. The novel's events occupy eighteen books.

Henry Fielding was an English novelist and dramatist known for his rich, earthy humour and satirical prowess. Additionally, he holds a significant place in the history of law enforcement, having used his authority as a magistrate to found what some have called London's first police force, the Bow Street Runners.
