A childhood friend of mine is in Paris right now with her daughter's family taking in the sights. They somehow got a private tour of the Eiffel Tower this week. And today the tower employees went on strike.

Architecturally speaking the Eiffel tower is 986 feet, about 303+ meters, whereas the Washington Monument is at 555 feet, or about 170 meters.

Get used to metrics. The rest of the world uses the system and if you travel, you will be confronted by metrics constantly.
By the way, we use metrics to a certain degree here already. Haven't you bought a one or two liter bottle of soda?
In medicine, doses are given in cc's (cubic centimeters) and grams. Science fields consistently use the metric system.
Also, newer units introduced by engineers, such as kilovolts, megabytes, megapixels, and kilotons and megatons of TNT, are generally formulated in terms of powers of 10 and used extensively in the US.
Nutritional food labels typically report serving sizes in both systems but only list metric values (g or mg) for the breakdown of individual nutrients.
Wine is sold in standard bottles of 750 mL, as in the rest of the world. A fifth of liquor, once one-fifth of a U.S. gallon, or 757 mL, is now commonly 750 mL,
though it is still referred to as "a fifth". 
Don't kid yourself. To some degree, you use metrics already.
