In the movie, it starts by telling us that headstrong Thomas Dunson (John Wayne) starts a thriving Texas cattle ranch with the help of his faithful trail hand, Groot (Walter Brennan). He also has the help of his protégé, Matt Garth (Montgomery Clift), an orphan Dunson took under his wing when he (Matt) was just a boy. In need of money following the Civil War, Dunson and Matt will lead a cattle drive to Missouri, where they should be able to get a better price for their herd of cattle. While on their exhausting journey, the crotchety Dunson and his willful young partner (Matt) start to butt heads and fight. In the end, they both see the error of their ways and make peace.
"Red River" is an pawky film that was directed and produced by Howard Hawks. It gives a fictional account of the first cattle drive from Texas to Kansas along the Chisholm Trail. The harsh and dramatic tension in the film stems from a growing feud over the management of the drive. The film when released received mostly positive review from critics and fans. It costed 2.7 million US dollars to make and grossed just over 9.1 million dollars in the USA at the box office.
