The film "The Northman" is based on which country's legend?
"The Northman" (2022) tells the tale of Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård), a Viking prince from Denmark. He is a prince who is out for revenge for the death of his father. King Aurvandill (Ethan Hawke) is ambush and killed by his brother Fjölnir (Claes Bang). After seeing his village massacred and his mother taken away by his uncle, Amleth flees by boat swearing to avenge his father, save his mother, and kill his uncle Fjölnir.
The film has been directed and co-written by Robert Eggers. It was produced by Mark Huffam, Lars Knudsen, Robert Eggers, Arnon Milchan, and Skarsgård. Based on "The Legend of Amleth" by Saxo Grammaticus, the screenplay was written by the two men—Sjón (Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson, an Icelandic poet, novelist, lyricist, and screenwriter) and Eggers. Besides Skarsgård, Hawke, and Bang, the film stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman, Björk Guðmundsdóttir, and Willem Dafoe.
This film is also aided by spiritual entities and is foretold ahead of Amleth’s ascent to Valhalla. Amleth is a medieval figure in Scandinavian history and his story has been told and passed down over many centuries before being globally popularized in William Shakespeare’s "The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark" ("Hamlet") at the turn of the 17th century. "The Northman" includes a very good amount of Norse mythology, including references to Odin, Valhalla, and Valkyrie.
