The inaugural edition of George magazine was published in September 1995. A glossy and articulate publication, it was brought into infancy by John F. Kennedy, Jr. with the idea of making United States politics into worthy subject matter. The name of the monthly publication was, of course, a tribute to George Washington.

Of interest was the back cover of this initial edition. It showed only a picture of the face of Marilyn Monroe. Searching the magazine to determine who had paid for the influential marketing on this important issue gave no hints. Those who recall Marilyn know that she had a "beauty mark" which sometimes changed location. Yes, she added the mole with makeup. Focus on her beauty mark allowed the observer to see the well-recognized symbol of Mercedes Benz. Simply put, it was powerful advertising.

After JFK, Jr died in a tragic plane crash with himself as the pilot, the magazine lost its powerful backing and folded in 2001.
