In 1958's Oscar winning picture Louis Jourdan plays the impossibly handsome Gaston Lachaille, Paris' most eligible bachelor. The ultra-wealthy son of a sugar importer escapes the boredom of Parisian society with the family of one of his uncle's former mistresses and her granddaughter Gigi. This platonic relationship changes as he becomes aware that the young Gigi is becoming a beautiful young woman.

The movie won 9 Oscars including Best Picture. It was based on a novella by Collete and a previous movie by the same name. It is considered to be the last of the great MGM musicals.

While Gigi's Gaston has little resemblance to the arrogant Gaston of Beauty and the Beast, Lumierre bears a similarity to Maurice Chevalier's character Honore Lachaille, Gaston's uncle.
