The Irish singer Enya (pictured) re-named her home in honour of which fictional residence?
Manderley Castle in Dublin is owned by the Irish singer known professionally as Enya (born 1961) in tribute to the fictional residence created by Daphne du Maurier in her iconic 1938 Gothic novel "Rebecca".
Despite its somewhat medieval appearance, the castle was only built in the mid 19th century and opened in 1840. It was originally named Victoria Castle after the Queen who had ascended the British throne three years earlier. Its original owner was a British judge and Conservative Member of Parliament named Robert Warren.
In the 1920s much of the interior of the house was gutted by fire and was bought and restored by whisky magnate Thomas Power. Like his successor, he too had a fancy for literary names, and renamed it, Ayesha Castle, after the goddess who rose from the flames in Rider Haggard's novel "She".
Enya bought the castle in 1997. It is widely rumoured that she outbid the world-famous dancer Michael Flatley.
Like the unnamed narrator of "Rebecca", the residence has also brought her trouble, including several security breeches.
