The larger clam-shaped structure in the photo's left foreground serves as which kind of building in Singapore?
The Gardens by the Bay is an urban nature park spanning 110 hectares (270 acres) within the Marina Bay district of Singapore.
According to the Guinness World Records 2015 book, Gardens by the Bay is currently home to the largest glass greenhouse in the world. The Flower Dome is a greenhouse that covers 1.2 hectares (3 ac) under glass. Its column-free gridshell and arch structure lets in maximum light and replicates the cool-dry climate of Mediterranean and semi-arid subtropical regions of the world.
The Flower Dome sits alongside the 0.8 hectares (2 ac) Cloud Forest conservatory. Both glasshouses, designed by British architectural firm Wilkinson Eyre and Grant Associates, form the botanical arks that have become a distinct feature of Gardens by the Bay.
Unlike most temperate greenhouses which have a warm interior, the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest are climate-controlled in a sustainable, energy-efficient manner to provide a cool environment that brings forth the concept of perpetual spring in the tropics. The conservatories were opened to the public in June 2012.
A popular tourist attraction in Singapore, the park received 6.4 million visitors in 2014, while topping its 20 millionth visitor mark in 2015 and over 50 million in 2018.
