The longest version of the 1968 Iron Butterfly song 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' played for how many minutes?
'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' ('In the Garden of Eden') is a song recorded by Iron Butterfly and written by band member Doug Ingle. It was released in the band's 1968 album titled 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida'. At slightly over 17 minutes long (album version), it occupies the entire second side of the 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' album.
The lyrics are uncomplicated and easy to enjoy. They are however heard only at the beginning and the end of the song. The record was written and released when the band was just beginning to develop and publish songs. According to the drummer of the band (Ron Bushy), Ingle (an organist/vocalist) wrote the song one evening while he was drinking and enjoying an entire gallon of Red Mountain wine. When he was totally inebriated, Ingle then played the song for Bushy. Bushy then put Ingle's lyrics to the song down on paper. Ingle was slurring his words so badly that what was supposed to be "In the Garden of Eden" was interpreted by Bushy as 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida'.
Since the album with the song was released, edited and live versions of 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' have been made. These items are both longer and shorter than the original. The 17-minute original version has been edited down to 2:53. Released as part of the band's 1969 live album, titled 'Live', the song's live version is just over 19 minutes long. Many critics notwithstanding the additional recordings still believe that the 17-minute album version is the best.
