The lyrics, "... Livin' in the river of darkness / Beneath the neon lights" is part of which of these songs?
The music lyrics , "... Livin' in the river of darkness / Beneath the neon lights" is part of the song "You Belong to the City", a song written by Glenn Frey and Jack Tempchin, and recorded by Frey during his solo career. It was written specifically for the TV show "Miami Vice" in 1985. The song peaked at No. 2 on the US "Billboard" Hot 100 chart, although it did reach the top of the "Billboard" Top Rock Tracks chart.
The song, along with Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice Theme", helped the "Miami Vice" soundtrack album reach the top spot on the "Billboard" 200 chart. Frey also had fun performing this song live while touring with the Eagles until 2005. A version of the Eagles performing the song is found on their DVD "Farewell Tour I: Live from Melbourne" (2004).
Regarding the song's history, it was explicitly featured in, and written specifically for, the Miami Vice episode "Prodigal Son". In the episode, it is one where one of the two guys, playing one of the clever Miami detectives goes back to New York City, where he is from and he’s walking the streets of New York City. This song was written for that. Tempchin said, "I remember Glenn was just strumming an E minor chord. And all of a sudden, he goes, ‘You belong to the city’. And I just went, ‘Yeah, that’s it, that’s it!’ What a phrase, You belong to the city. Here, the guy is going back and he doesn’t fit in, but he does fit in. And so we wrote that song directly for that show.”
