The Miles Davis album "Kind of Blue" features which other Jazz legend?
The other Jazz legend on the 1959 Miles Davis album "Kind of Blue" is John Coltrane. The album features Davis' ensemble sextet consisting of saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb, with former band pianist Bill Evans appearing on most of the tracks in place of Kelly. When Coltrane played his instrument as part of the album, it was pointed out by others within the sextet that his playing was compressed, with rapid runs cascading in hundreds of notes per minute. His efforts helped to make the album very distinctive and idiosyncratic. Coltrane left Davis' group in April 1960.
John William Coltrane's life started in September 1926 and lasted until July 1967. His birth took place in Hamlet, NC and he died in Huntington Hospital, Huntington, NY. He became an icon and was famous for playing songs as an American jazz saxophonist. In addition, he was an exceptionally talented music composer. He worked in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career. Later he helped pioneer the use of modes and was at the forefront of free jazz.
