Katy Jurado (María Cristina Estela Marcela Jurado García, b. January 1924 – d. July 2002) was a Mexican actress who began her acting career in Mexico. In 1951, she was recruited by American filmmakers in Mexico and began her Hollywood career. She acted in notable Western films of the 1950s and 1960s. Her talent for playing a variety of characters helped pave the way for Mexican actresses in American cinema.
She was the first Latin American actress nominated for an Oscar, as Best Supporting Actress for her work in "Broken Lance" (1954), and was the first to win a Golden Globe Award, for her performance in "High Noon" (1952). She also appeared in "Arrowhead" (1953), "Broken Lance" (1954), and "Trapeze" (1956). During her career, she appeared in films from 1970–2002. She made her final film appearance in "Un secreto de Esperanza", a 2002 Mexican film written and directed by Leopoldo Laborde.
In the 1963 American Western comedy film "McLintock!", starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara which was directed by Andrew V. McLaglen, it didn't contain any performance by Jurado. This film stars John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara; the co-stars are Wayne's son Patrick Wayne, Stefanie Powers, Jack Kruschen, Chill Wills, and Yvonne DeCarlo (a special guest star). The film's screenplay was written by James Edward Grant, loosely based on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew". The film was produced by Wayne's company, Batjac Productions; it was a total success in all respects.
