The statue of "Liberty Enlightening the World" is definitely the best known symbol of the USA famous worldwide. The Statue of Liberty symbolizes democracy and freedom of the people of the world. It was given to the US as a friendly gift from the people of France. Seven rays of the Lady's crown symbolize 7 continents; the chains at her feet are a symbol of freedom from tyranny, discrimination and oppression; and the tablet the Lady is holding contains the most important date in the national history of America, which is familiar to every proud American.

John Rucker Jr. You left out an important word. Chains are not a symbol of freedom from tyranny, but BROKEN chains are. The chains at Liberty's feet are BROKEN chains. It makes a difference.
