The American flag for the first time was flown overseas at a fort in the foreign country of Libya. In 1805, the U.S. flag was flown over Fort Derne on the shores of Tripoli.

In addition to the above, Robert Peary in 1909 placed an American flag at the North Pole. It was a flag that had been made by his wife, Josephine Diebitsch Peary (married 1888–1920). Next, Barry Bishop in 1963 placed an American flag on top of Mount Everest. Also in July 1969, the American flag made it into outer space when Neil Armstrong placed it on Earth's moon. Flags were subsequently placed on the lunar surface during each of the six manned landings concerning the Apollo program.
