The U.S. TV show "Sing Along With Mitch" host Mitch Miller had a hit record with a choral arrangement from which American standard?
On the 1961 - 1964 U.S. TV show "Sing Along with Mitch" which was hosted by Mitch Miller, had a hit record with a choral arrangement from the American standard 'The Yellow Rose of Texas'. This was one song from many music genres which was featured on the show. Songs came from various forms such as traditional music, traditional folk music, contemporary folk music, or music originating among the people of America.
Mitch Miller, the goateed head of Columbia Records, waved a baton and led big sing along group performances of American standard songs. The songs were ones that bucked rock and roll trends sweeping the nation in the 1960s. The show itself was a kind of corny forerunner to karaoke. It featured a bouncing ball that guided viewers over scrolling lyrics so they could join in on such popular songs as `You Are My Sunshine,' `Ain't We Got Fun,' `Be Kind to Your Web-Footed Friends' and `The Yellow Rose of Texas' (a No. 1 hit for Miller in 1955). For six weeks, 'The Yellow Rose of Texas' was a Billboard number one.
The original version of the song dates back to the 1850s and was inspired by an African American slave girl. In the version popularized by Miller, the girl is called Emily, the "Maid of Morgan's Point".
