The word "phocine" pertains to which carnivorous animal?
The word phocine derives from the modern Latin “Phocinae”, or from the Greek “phōkē” for seal.
Seals, sea lions and walruses are pinnipeds and are carnivorous, fin-footed, (all four limbs modified into flippers) semiaquatic marine mammals. The pinnipeds group contains three families which are “phocidae” the earless or true seal (common seal),”otaridae” the eared seals ( fur seals and sea lions) and the “odobenidae” (walrus).
There are 33 species of seals in total, the Southern Elephant seal being the largest and the Baikal seal the smallest . Seals spend much of their life in water, but they mate and give birth to pups on the shore. Seals are believed to have evolved from land based, bear or otter-like ancestors.
