The world's largest and most sophisticated geothermal spa (Blue Lagoon) is located in Reykjavik, Iceland. It is a place where temperatures for bathing and swimming in the lagoon averages 37–39 °C (99–102 °F). Regarding the geothermal heat for this wellspring, it comes to the ground surface with water in fissures, cracks, and permeable rock. Iceland is a very fortunate country to have a geothermal heating source which can be continuously used at Blue Lagoon. By naturally occurring, geothermal heat allows a great many healthy activities to take place in and around the city of Reykjavik.

Besides Blue Lagoon, geothermal sources are used to power the entire city of Reykjavik. This is a city with an electricity distribution network harnessing 750 MW thermal power from steam, and a water distribution system generating 60 million cubic meters of hot water. Experts note that the use of this natural resource has massively reduced the city's dependence on fossil fuels. By using geothermal power, it makes this city a very clean and enjoyable place.

As a footnote, by visiting and bathing in the waters of Blue Lagoon, health benefits such as cleaning, exfoliating, and nourishing a person's skin may occur. Also those afflicted with certain skin diseases have found that a visit or two to Blue Lagoon may be worthwhile.
