The film begins when a pair of petty criminals attempt to rob his small-town diner. Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) quickly and easily kills them both. In the flush of news coverage of Tom's heroic actions, a threatening stranger named Carl Fogarty (Ed Harris) comes to town. He fingers the unassuming family man (Tom) as long-missing Philadelphia mobster Joey Cusack. To the horror of his wife, Edie (Maria Bello), and teenage son, Jack (Ashton Holmes), Tom finds he must confront his violent past.
William Hurt (William McChord Hurt) was born in Washington, D.C. in March 1950. In 2019, he became a 69 year old American. He had become one of the top leading men in films in the '80s. As an actor, he is known for his intensity and effective portrayals of complex characters. Although from Washington, D.C., Hurt saw much of the world by the time he was grown. His father worked for the U.S. State Department.
To become an actor, Hurt trained at Tufts University and The Juilliard School. During his career, he has been nominated for 4 Academy Awards, including his nomination for his supporting role in David Cronenberg's "A History of Violence". Hurt received Best Supporting Actor accolades for the role from the Los Angeles Film Critics circle and the New York Film Critics Circle.
