To whom has the winter solstice (21 December) been nominated?
The Winter Solstice (21 December) is the shortest day of the year at the Northern hemisphere, and it has been dedicated to Apostle St. Thomas "as his faith was the weakest". Traditionally the day of Thomas has began the Yuletide, which lasts until Saint Canute (January 6).
The day of St. Thomas has marked traditionally several changes in life - the great cleansing of the house, tapping the Christmas ale and preparing for the high holidays. The device on the picture is Thomas Cross, a traditional Finnish christmas decoration.
St. Thomas is the patron saint of lawyers and architects.
