C.S. Lewis, the author of the Narnia books and other classics, also wrote some science fiction novels.
Beginning in 1938, and later in 1943 and 1945, a few years prior to his publishing of the much better known Chronicles of Narnia series, Clive Staples (C.S.) Lewis published a trilogy of what is best called science fiction, starting with Out of the Silent Planet, in which an earthling, Elwin Ransom, travels to Mars, which is called Malacandra in the book. Following that, the book Perelandra was written; this time, set on the planet Venus...and finally, That Hideous Strength ends the trilogy and is set on our home planet, Earth.
According to a letter, he was influenced to write this trilogy in part from HG Wells' First Men in the Moon, which was first published in 1901, and also by David Lindsay's A Voyage to Arcturus, which was published in 1920.

Andy Gibson, I beg to differ. This American was raised on C.S. Lewis and remains a huge fan. We aren't all brutish, uneducated thugs despite what the world may think in light of the person who currently serves as the nation's President. On that score, sorry. The majority of us did not vote for nor do we support him.

What a shame the news of the death of C. S. Lewis (born in Belfast, Ireland) was overshadowed by the assassination of Pres. John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963. Mr. Lewis' death is merely a footnote in history, but his writings (in particular "Surprised by Joy" and "Mere Christianity" - personal favorites) will always be remembered.

williamrlaughlin, You know I rarely disagree with you. Your comments are usually well thought out and supported. But I think you missed the mark on this one. I believe Andy Gibson and babafrby are correct on this one. People from the US (I don't use the term "American" because, as a Canadian, I am an American) do have a tendency to think only within their own borders. How many times have we seen complaints about soccer or cricket questions as an example. Anything outside their narrow sphere of knowledge is instantly put down.
