Vaulting is most often a feature of which part of a church?
Vault (French voûte, from Italian volta) is an architectural term for an arched form used to provide a space with a ceiling or roof. The parts of a vault exert lateral thrust that requires a counter resistance. When vaults are built underground, the ground gives all the resistance required. However, when the vault is built above ground, various replacements are employed to supply the needed resistance. An example is the thicker walls used in the case of barrel or continuous vaults. Buttresses are used to supply resistance when intersecting vaults are employed.

My college French history prof in the 60s described the building of Notre Dame cathedral in great detail, emphasizing the vaulted roof and flying buttresses. So I could never forget this.

It seems that some people have adopted the practice of vaulting over the altar. Tsh! We'll have to alter that.

Val Wilkinson, I lie down on a pew to look at the vaulted roof without craning my neck. It also stops me staggering or falling over, neither of which is a good look, especially in a church.

I would think it would be one or the other, roof or ceiling but roof didn't make much sense to me.

ok hands up time - I have spent a lot of time since childhood days wandering through the wealth of Saxon and medieval churches that England has in all the places I visit, and also their churchyards. Such fascinating history. Wall paintings 1000 years old, incredible ceilings with embellishments you would not dream of, memories in the walls and floors to the memory of those loved by wealthy and influential people. Fascinating the differences in the coat of arms of the royals through the Reformation and after. The stone in Yorkshire churches is more durable than those of eg Kent and Sussex, so much more left without erosion. In Yorkshire the stone walls are likely to be stained from the smokey chimneys of the Industrial Revolution - as seen in this photo.
NB if you want to look at a beautiful vaulted roof, look in a mirror rather than craning your neck!
