American Motors Corporation (AMC) was established on January 14, 1954 by merging Nash-Kelvinator Corporation and Hudson Motor Car Company. At that time it was the largest corporate merger. AMC went on to compete with Chrysler, Ford and General Motors by producing such automobiles as the Rambler, Javelin, Gremlin and Pacer. AMC was known as a small company but was clever enough to exploit special market segments left untended by the big three automakers of the time. At it's demise in 1987, the New York Times wrote that AMC was never a company with the power or cost structure to compete in the U.S. or abroad.

AMC was purchased by Chrysler on March 9, 1987.
