Kiss Me Kate (1948) was a modern musical production of William Shakespeare's play, The Taming of the Shrew. The musical was a Broadway show about people (a divorced couple being the protagonists) performing/practicing a musical adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew. So, it was a musical play about a musical about a play. This was a meta twist that audiences seem to like.

In 1951, the musical was made into a movie. The movie did not equal the success of the musical. The original musical production starred Alfred Drake, Patricia Morison, Lisa Kirk and Harold Lang and won the Tony Award. It won the 1st Tony Award ever presented for Best Musical in 1949.

Now, it is sometimes hard to believe that this comedy (The Taming of the Shrew) by William Shakespeare is said to have been originally written between 1590 and 1592. At the time, Shakespeare used his skill expertly. He revealed themes about men and women (marriage, duty, love, etc.) that we still debate today, over 425 years later.
