In the movie, Shawshank Redemption (1994), it is said, "Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free." This tagline is used to emphasize a character (Andy Dufresne) who has hope along with strength and the ability to profoundly inspire those around him.

Andy (Tim Robbins) is a successful banker who is wrongfully accused of murdering his wife. He is found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. He is however not intimidated or deterred by the hopelessness of the sentence, sexual abuse of the inmates, an authoritarian warden, or any physical abuse by the guards.

Andy is a man who knows his skills, abilities, and how to use them. He embodies the strengths of perseverance, prudence, and good judgment. And it is hope that is his greatest strength; it brings his others into play. Here Andy endorses Martin Luther's sentiment that "everything that is done in the world is done with hope." He could never support Benjamin Franklin's belief that "he who lives upon hope will die fasting." This idea from Franklin is obviously too pessimistic for Andy Dufresne.
